Main species ๐ฑ
The genus Primula includes about 500 species native to the temperate and cold zones of the northern hemisphere, South America, Java, South Asia, China, and Japan. The species of the genus can be divided between primroses with late-winter and spring flowering ๐ผ and Primroses with summer-autumn flowering ๐ธ.
Among the species of the genus are included annual and perennial herbaceous plants ๐ฟ, from a few centimeters tall up to several decimeters, which can have sessile or petiolate rosette basal leaves ๐, which can produce colorful flowers ๐ธ gathered in umbrellas โ๏ธ, flower heads ๐ผ, clusters ๐บ, or overlapping verticils ๐, surrounded by bracts ๐ or supported by long stems ๐พ.
Primula ๐
Primroses are rustic and hardy plants ๐ช, able to overcome winter in different ways, therefore temperature is not a limiting factor in cultivation. They love bright exposures โ๏ธ, but not direct sun โ๏ธ, especially in the middle of summer.
In pot cultivation ๐บ the plant can be easily moved ๐. When raised in open ground ๐ก you must find a position more sheltered from the sun ๐, for example at the foot of trees ๐ณ and shrubs ๐ฟ that provide shade โ๏ธ, avoiding southern exposures.
Primroses do not need special care or attention so their cultivation is quite simple ๐ฑ.
How long do Primroses last? โณ
Most species of primrose have a fairly long-lasting lifespan โ, over 2-3 years of life. The duration of the primroses is also determined by the quality and richness of nutrients of the cultivation soil ๐ฑ, within certain limits so it is possible to ensure the plant the maximum aesthetic yield with adequate and continuous cultivation practices.
Where are primroses kept? ๐ก
Primrose loves to be placed in a very bright place โ๏ธ, but never exposed to direct sunlight โ๏ธ. It prefers cool environments โ๏ธ. The ideal temperature is around 10-15 °C ๐ก๏ธ, but it is advisable that it does not exceed 16 °C ๐ก๏ธ in particular during the flowering period as higher temperatures can reduce it significantly.
It is necessary to remember that Primroses love cool temperatures and are allergic to heat โ๏ธ: if you want to keep them beautiful for as long as possible you have to choose a fairly cool area of the house ๐ก.
Temperature ๐ก๏ธ
It prefers cool environments โ๏ธ. The ideal temperature is around 10-15 °C ๐ก๏ธ.
Light โ๏ธ
Primrose requires exposure in a brightly lit place โ๏ธ, but should never be exposed to direct sunlight โ๏ธ. When bred in open ground ๐ก it is necessary to find a more sheltered position from the sun ๐, such as at the foot of trees ๐ณ and shrubs ๐ฟ that provide shade โ๏ธ, avoiding southern exposures.
Loam ๐ฑ
The ideal soil for the Primrose is medium-textured, fresh, with a good supply of organic substance ๐ฑ. Poorly draining soils should be avoided, with the exception of Primula japonica ๐ฏ. When preparing the soil it is desirable to fine the soil of mature organic matter, such as manure ๐ฉ, pelleted manure ๐พ, earthworm humus ๐ชฑ or compost ๐.
Watering ๐ง
.Watering must be regular not excessively abundant but such that the soil remains moist but not soup ๐ง๏ธ; it is a mistake to let excess water stagnate in the saucer ๐ฝ๏ธ. Excellent spraying of the foliage ๐ฆ, but using the precaution of not wetting the flowers ๐ธ that could be damaged. During the summer ๐ it should be watered regularly to keep the soil always moist. When the plant is in bloom ๐ผ it is very important a constant watering ๐ง. Beware of water stagnation that the primrose does not tolerate ๐ง.
Multiplication by seeds of the Primrose ๐ฑ
The seeds should be placed in parallel rows using a seed soil ๐ฑ. Given the small size, they must be pushed under the ground using a flat stick ๐ชต.
It is then necessary to cover the tray with a transparent plastic sheet โ๏ธ to obtain the ideal temperature ๐ก๏ธ and should be placed in a place with a temperature of 12-15 °C ๐ก๏ธ and in the shade โ๏ธ. Every day the plastic must be removed to eliminate condensation ๐ง and to check the humidity of the soil ๐ฑ.
The budding of seeds occurs after about fifteen days ๐ฑ. Then you take off the cover โ๏ธ and put the tray in a bright position with good ventilation ๐จ.
