Old garden favorites, Snapdragons enjoy a long blooming season, extending from spring to fall in cool summer areas, and provide a delightful and colorful show. Snapdragons are perennial plants that can withstand short periods of frost. They often overwinter in protected areas up to zone 5. Blooming for months, Snapdragons (Antirrhinum Majus) are eye-catching bedding plants loved for their large, snout-shaped flowers atop their bright green foliage.Fragrant, the Snapdragon flowers come in a wide array of attractive shades, from pastel to bright colors including pink, orange, yellow, peach, purple, white, red, and bicolor. They can be classic looking with two puffed petals that look like stacked berets, or azalea-flowered (fringed or ruffled).
The fragrance of Snapdragon flowers is subtle yet delightful, often compared to a mix of sweet and tangy notes. Its gentle, pleasant scent adds a touch of charm to any garden or bouquet.
About this item
- Snapdragon seeds can be direct sown in early spring or late fall, planted on the surface of the soil. When seedlings appear, thin or transplant them. To start the seed indoors, begin 8-10 weeks before the last spring frost. Plant Snapdragon seeds in a flat on the surface of the soil; keep the soil lightly moist and at a temperature of 65-70 degrees F, in indirect sunlight.
- Snapdragons make excellent cut flowers and back borders in flower landscapes for your home garden. For Cut Flowers: Choosing stems that still have some buds unopened, cut them at the base and remove only the leaves that will be below the surface of the water in the vase. Fresh cut snapdragons have a vase life of 7-10 days.
- This plant prefers full sun and well drained soil, though it can tolerate partial shade.
- Snapdragons attract pollinators such as bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies.
- Germination should take place within 10-14 days. When plants reach 2-3" high, transplant them. Since plants that develop buds most likely will not survive transplanting, be sure to plant them out before they reach that point. 🪴 Sun: Full/Partial Shade - Planting Depth: Broadcast Seeds - Spacing: Broadcast - Water: Moderate/Low - Days to Maturity/Bloom: 45-65 days - Height: 24”
